TikTok Influencers Driving Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Weight-Loss Medication

A shadow market for unapproved weight-loss medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.

Experimental Drug Gaining Traction Online

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing properties. Viewers are urged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.

Active Trade on Social Networks

Additionally, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where groups with thousands of participants share “before and after” photos, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Vendors market the drug there before directing customers to WhatsApp for purchases.

Understanding Retatrutide

Retatrutide is an investigational injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help individuals lose up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the next Ozempic.

Medical Professionals Express Concerns

However, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what remains an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could result in individuals injecting products of unknown origin.

Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of approved slimming products such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Status and Implementation

Marketing the unapproved drug on TikTok or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Some content creators attempt to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, risking fines, prosecution or prison.

Service Response and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the service has removed violative material and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The company stated it was committed to keeping the service secure and investing in strengthening enforcement strategies.

Online Trading Activities

Research also found groups with up to nine thousand participants selling the experimental drug using the platform's integrated search feature, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly brings up channels with thousands of users, populated with images of slimming results, positive testimonials and step-by-step instructions for mixing or administering at residence.

Within minutes of entering one community, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a alleged laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.

Item Details and Pricing

Within these communities, messages show dark colored parcels with Royal Mail labels, claiming to contain new batches. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use pens typically priced at £160 for 20mg. When asked how long a injector should last, sellers give conflicting answers varying between a several days to “depends on your body”.

Service Moderation and Safety Actions

A spokesperson for Telegram said it regularly moderated dangerous content on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Healthcare Expert Cautions

“Individuals are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not include what they advertise,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at Chemist4U.

A medical professional of Asda Online Doctor linked the increase in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are turning to social media. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the conditions they were made in was clean,” she explained.

Her staff has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unconfirmed sources. “We understand the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or WhatsApp is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Manufacturer Statement

A representative from Eli Lilly stated retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been evaluated or approved by any regulatory agency globally. “Therefore at this point no one can market [it] for human use,” they said, noting that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially significant health risks”.
